Hello everyone.

My friends and I were sitting around, scrambling for something to do over our Spring Break next week and we came up with the idea to paddle from Augusta, GA to Savannah, GA and make it into Savannah in time for the St. Patrick's day celebrations. I know a couple people who have made the paddle before but not quite gone all the way into the outskirts of Savannah like we would want to.

I just have a few concerns that I would like to run by you guys and see what you think.

1. The length is about 150 miles. We will not have to go through any damns, we should be able to stay on the water the whole way. Looking at some resources it seems that the trip is a comfortable 3-4 day trip. Is this too long for some of my friends that don't have that much paddling experience? We are all active and in good shape, but would that kind of trip be too much, should we drive and knock out 50 miles that way? Also keep in mind that we're going to be there for 2 days of parties afterwards and we don't want to be too spent, I just worry about 3 days of paddling.

2. The kayaks we have available are 4 Native Ultimates. 2 14.5ft and 2 12ft boats. Are we going to kill ourselves trying to paddle these barges that far? For those not familiar with the native ultimate here is a 14.5.

*also available to use are a Mad River Synergy 12, and a Mad River Adventurer Canoe, and I think that is 16ft.

3. This might be only for people that know the area of Savannah but the ideal situation to have happen is to find a place to lock our boats up, and catch a cab to the hotel, any ideas on good places we should ask for that kind of service, we're not afraid to ask just about any area that looks suitable :). Worst case scenario we have friends that live about 25 minutes out that could come pick us up and let us leave them at their place, but in all honesty we like the adventure of kind of doing it on our own.

4. Obviously this is all considering weather is going to allow the trip. Any tips on how to gauge the weather, how much rain is enough to cancel the trip etc.

5. I have been doing some pretty extensive research on these multi day kayaking trips, so I'm familiar with most of the tip websites out there, but if you have any tips you might want to give us that would be great!

Thanks so much in advance.

Sounds like quite an adventure you are planning!:D Please research thoroughly and talk to a local outfitter or avid outdoors person that can offer some real life input about that particular waterway for this time of year. Spring rains and moving water can be a legitimate reason to postpone your adventure.
I know nothing about the area you are considering for your trip and the only things I can suggest is enjoy your youth and make informed decisions. File a float plan with local water patrol and the water patrol in the areas you will be traveling through and plan ending your trip at. Check in with the water patrol when the trip is complete. It would also be a good idea to get a copy of it to your friends that you may be meeting up with and your parents. (Hey, that’s just the Mom coming out in me:)). A cell phone may not get service (if assistance is needed) so please plan on additional ways to communicate…just in case.
If you have done extensive research you know all the required supplies for such an undertaking. Please make sure those with less experience also know what they are in for. Even if everything is planned and prepared for, it could be a real drag to have someone out and on the second day they decide they really dislike camping and paddling without a hot shower daily. It’s just not fun paddling with unhappy campers or paddlers.
BE SAFE and have fun!
