How dangerous is it to kayak down a river while you're relatively inexperienced?

Thats hard to say, depending on the river. Go talk to your local kayak place and ask questions about the river in question. My friends and me try new places all the time with no fear. But, you need to be smart. Have fun and get info. Also there are books available with tons of info. I have one for michigan rivers.

Please research ( paddlers, fishermen, water patrol officers, Fish & Wildlife Dept., water gauges cfs on the internet or phone) before you make a river trip. I would hate for a fun adventure to turn into the worst day of your life. I only paddle on gentle rivers as white water does not call my name. Even gentle rivers can get crazy when dam releases, precipitation, nightfall, and logistics come into play.

May I suggest that you post where you are considering paddling and perhaps someone that is familiar with it can offer some guidance so you can make safe decisions.

Ditto what the other folks said. Do your research. Even a river that appears to be just flatwater can have a strong current which can make for dangerous conditions if you're inexperienced. If you know that it has whitewater sections, then you shouldn't even consider it of course without having received professional instruction in whitewater technique. Don't let us dissuade you, but just do your research first and be sure that the section of river is well within your abilities.

just something to add to what keith said... If your a beginner the buddy system works best. Part of the reason I joined the forum. See if I could find anyone local to kayak with. Im a recreational kayaker, but Im interested in white water kayaking eventually. Im looking into instructors and classes that offer training in the techinque. Ive only been kayaking for 6 years but its not something Id want to attempt with little river experience.

All great advice,

Able, have you found someone to go Kayaking with? If not, can you give us a better location and perhaps another member in your area would be a good resource.

Regards.

I have found a local Kayak club and boy was it great!

Flipping Cold! But great.

We went out on a private lake and spent the whole day paddling.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Now I am getting ready to look for my own boat!

That's great. Please let us know if we can be of assistance in your search for a kayak, and welcome to the sport.

Thanks for all for all of the support, really love the site and the people here.

BTW: I am looking at joining a local club in the area. Since it is cold there will be a meeting next month.

Will keep you all up to date.
