So here is another newbie question from someone that hasn't even purchased a kayak yet. My wife is already planning some trips that might involve an overnight at a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast...Whatever!? What do you folks do in those cases? Are the rooftop locks/ lock systems worth the money? Is there a getter way to secure your kayaks?

I have used Lasso Security Cables, you can visit their website here (http://www.lassosecuritycables.com/index.html) . There is a dealer near you at:
Fluid Fun Canoe and Kayak
609 N. Division St.
Bristol, IN 46507
Tel: (877) 513-2145

Hope this helps and let us know what you decide.

So you felt safe with the cable type locks and leaving your kayaks on the roof all night? Thanks for the info.

At the time, yes. The weakest part of the cable was the lock, but I never had a loss or even a visible attempt at the kayak.
Now when I travel, I use an enclosed trailer or when using the top of the Yukon, I use a custom rack that locks with a pin lock, similar to the one I use to lock the receiver of my tow bar.
Let me see if I can come up with a couple links for locks I have seen others use.

I have the NRS Lash Lock (http://www.kayakreview.org/go/lashlock/) and have been happy with it. It's long enough to lock two kayaks without a problem. Keep in mind that all of these cable locks really just deter theft rather than prevent it, but personally I still think the additional peace of mind is worth the small cost of the lock.

Keith beat me to it about the NRS Lash Lock. My buddy uses one and he likes it well enough.
I second the idea that locks just keep honest people honest.
