I am new to kayaking, but I have a large goal to accomplish in a few years time. In roughly 2+ years I plan on traveling from where I live (Ohio) all the way down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Grand vision, right?
I am starting from scratch. I have been looking into new kayaks, the materials I need to bring, the trip route itself, etc.. I need advise over the next couple years on things I will need beyond a doubt.
The first thing I need is a kayak that can handle the long haul. Any advise?

That is indeed a grand goal, but I wish you luck. For that kind of journey/expedition, you're going to want a touring kayak. Check out How to Choose the Best Kayak For You (http://www.kayakreview.org/kayak-review-how-to-choose-the-best-kayak-for-you) and How To Choose the Best Touring Kayak For You (http://www.kayakreview.org/touring-kayaks-and-sea-kayaks) and let us know what additional questions you have. On such a large river with substantial shipping traffic and many populated areas, I would guess that kayak camping may be a challenge in some sections. Doing it as a fundraiser for a charity may get you permission to camp where you otherwise couldn't but then of course it also becomes an even bigger project with public relations, sponsorship, etc.

BSquare,

What a great adventure you have planned! Might I ask what motivated you to do this?

Looking forward to hearing more about your progress and training.

Very interesting! When you get to the stage where know exactly what your route will be I’m betting other water dogs will offer assistance, encouragement, and perhaps like to meet you while on your journey.

My goal is much much smaller as I’m planning/dreaming of just paddling from one small town to another small town in Ky. this summer.

Please keep us all posted as you plan and experience your adventure.

Any update on how you are coming with this?

How will you get new provisions? Will you stop every night, sleep in a motel and eat at a restaruant? (Hey! people here in Florida tour that way.)
Would you carry enough provisions for 5 days or so and sleep in a tent? That'll determine how big of a kayak you'll require. I have a Necky Chatham kayak. Great touring kayak, but it don't hold a lot of stuff.
I'd recommend a polyethylene kayak. Practically indestructible. And the extra 25# it weighs won't matter when you have it loaded with all that gear.
Have you researched Ohio River Locks & Dams? I'm pretty sure kayaks aren't allowed, so you may have to portage a loaded kayak a couple of miles. Or just put in below the locks, maybe Cincinnati.
