You have seen the threads asking - what is the best kayak, paddle or lifejacket, etc. for the intended purpose. I believe learning what not to invest your money in is as equally educational.

I have had only one experience so far of a truly bad purchase. It was a brand new generic (and I do mean generic) 10 ft recreational boat that had no brand name on it. That should probably have been a clue. I put it on my credit card by phone for a friend (who was temporally short on funds and wanted that really great priced boat). We both looked at the boat earlier on a shopping trip and it appeared fine. It was only a basic boat with the bonus of a dry storage pot but sadly the store didn’t have the option of testing it on water.

The boat was a true horror on the water and would not in any way even pretend to track straight. After three different people attempted to paddle it on various outings, I decided I had to see what the problem was.

After trying to paddle this piece of useless plastic I opted to throw up my personal white flag of surrender. Getting this thing to track in a straight line was not within my abilities no matter how much I wanted it to. I would not wish this boat on anyone. Although after my friend paid me for the boat they did unload it on some unfortunate person at the famous 127 yard sale. Hopefully the person who purchased it can successfully use it for sledding in the snow, as a huge blue flower pot or to be a water trough for a herd of pigmy goats.

What has been your worst paddle fund investment?

It has to be the Ocean Kayak Cabo.

It has bad maneuverability, bad stability, bad tracking, is very heavy kayak, and durability was very poor.

I dontated it as a flower pot to my wifes garden.

I’m somewhat surprised that no one else has had bad luck on purchasing kayaking items. Come on guys! Surely you have picked up a pair of gloves or water socks or a paddle that you would not recommend to a friend to invest in. After all we are all here to learn from others experiences. I'd really like to get some feedback.

Well, I have to say that I have had several that are close in the "Ugh", why did I buy that category.

However, the winner has to be an Overboard Dry Bag, it just wouldn't do the job. I could put it on top of the Kayak on the shore and somehow it would get water in it.

The company sent me 3 replacements with the same problem, there were leaks that could just not be explained. Guess it was a bad manufacturing run.

I dont want to bash the brand of my boat, but I will say I bought a 12' yak at a store that rhymes with flander tountain. It was rated for 300# and I weighed ~290. It was very unstable and paddled in circles. I was bummed. I use my kids 10.5' Ocean Beach yak from Dicks and it was fine for me even though only rated at 250#.
Im in the market for a new one, but I don't know what to do with the old one.

Used kayaks are easy to sell if they are priced right. A boat that didn't work well for you may be just what someone else would like to have. Let me know what area you are in, what kind of boat you want to get rid of and price. I may have a buyer for you. PM me.

rcurry,
I replied to your PM; not sure if I'm doing this correctly (never really used the PM feature)...I'm in Bloomsburg (central) PA. Boat details are in the reply. Let me know if you didn't get it.
THANKS -tayb0w

Tayb0w you may want to post your boat for sale publicly for all to see on kayakmagazine.com sites’ free listings. It’s much easier to sell big items like kayaks locally. Who knows…someone in your area may really want the boat for a Christmas gift. :)

A hard question to answer, I have honestly never bought anything I have had any problems with.

I asnwered an ad and met a guy at Quick Trip 20 miles away from my house about 9:30 at night. The price seemed right so I bought it. I can't get in it. Sigh.

Worst purchases are going to be like best purchases - very much an individual thing.
What doesn't suit one person is perfect for someone else.
Also, do you buy something for the right purpose? It's no use blaming a sea kayak for not being a playboat or vice versa.
I'm big and heavy for a kayaker so I look carefully at the load capacity of a boat. This worked ok for me until I bought an inflatable. Although the max load of the inflatable was higher then my weight, it must have been assumed that the load would be distributed over the boat (e.g. in 2 people) - when I'm in it, it folds up in the middle, no matter what pressure I inflate it to.
Is that the boat's fault? I'm going on a diet
