Securing Kayak to Van roof?

Kayak up or down? I have seen most mounting instructions for commercial products say to mount up. Why?

I don't know for sure, but it seems easier to load with the top up. (If you have to slide it on the mounts, you're working with the smooth bottom) However, I think if rain was anticipated, I'd mount bottom up. These are just my thoughts on the matter, and to be truthful, I've only carried mine with the top up.

The simple truth is follow the manufactures recommendations for the mount or the boat. They have, or should have tested it this way and their design is best used as well ... they designed it.

Just remember to follow common sense for your situation, location, environment.
