I picked up my first kayak recently, a Kestrel 120 HV. I went with the HV because it just felt better, but after my first paddle I did have some issues with stability and ended up throwing my knees out to the side with my feet together. Some of that may be just getting used to my balance and stroke, and I'll get some more day trips under my belt before making any changes, but I was thinking of adding some foam in strategic places. Any suggestions on a) balance or b) the best way to add braces?

Regarding balance/positioning, it sounds like you've already discovered the correct position, with your knees out and your feet together. In traditional sit-in kayaks, like the Kestrel, the places that your body makes contact with the cockpit are the places that give you control of your kayak. For optimum control, you'll want a snug fit at the hips and thighs. For recreational kayaking, you'll want to be able to move your knees outward so that you have a snug fit when you want (or need) good boat control, but you'll also want to be able to relax your legs of course. So try playing with pads/braces at those spots. You can either try to make your own pads or buy a kit. NRS sells several types of kayak outfitting (http://www.kayakreview.org/go/NRSoutfitting/) kits.

My wife and I are buying kayaks tomorrow. The Kestrel is definitely in the running. We are probablty looking at the 14 footers. The Wilderness system Tsunami series is also in the mix. I am kind of limited because of my size...6 ft. 250lbs. good to see someone else posting their experiences. Thanks

i have the Wilderness system Tsunami 16.5. i am 6-3 230# the cockpit is very small. i cut off the knee pads and installed different. very fast but getting in an out is a pain. i like my 14.5 Perception Carolina much better. just my opinion : )

Your boat should have foot pegs, adjust those that that your knees brace against the boat, I have found that more comfortable than sitting with my feet together.
