Hi,
I have been lurking here for a while, and thought I'd finally say hello.
I live in Michigan's upper peninsula. For over ten years, I have been paddling a recreation boat in the local river and having a ball. I also have a sea kayak, which is perfect for Lake Superior and Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, which are nearby. I have only been on the big lakes a few times, as I'm pretty chicken. I started practicing kayak skills in the local pool, but I'm still chicken. Recently we started a paddling club, and we have an ACA coastal kayaking instructor. With his help, I've gained a lot of skills. I am working to be better at bracing, and have begun to catch on to rolls. I got six consecutive rolls today (I'm soooo excited!!!!!), but I have to say, I think my best course of action is to not go out when the surface is "textured."
Over the years, I have purchased a Pakboat Puffin, and an inflatable Advanced Elements Snapdragon (I think that's the model it is.). I got both of them because I wanted to have something that I could drop in the trunk when I travel, and then put together to go play, if/when I find someplace that looks enticing. That's been pretty wonderful. I've never gone out on any big water with those boats, but it's really great to be able to paddle most anywhere. I do worry that I'll be puttering about breaking the rules for registering boats, but usually if I asks locals a few questions, I feel pretty confident about what I can and can't do. Anyway, I hope to learn a lot on this forum.
