Hi All,

I am about to get an Ascend A 10 Fishing Kayak from our local Bass Pro Shop here in Las Vegas so I can get out on the Lake (Lakes Mead and Mojave) and do battle with the local Striped Bass and Catfish populations. I do mostly catch and release, however I have been known to invite an especially tasty looking specimen home for dinner on occasion. ;)

I have had some experience with canoes and other small boats so I have gotten over the tipsiness issues in the past. My first trips out with it will be to check out how it handles, getting in and out, how to right it in case I misjudge just how far I can lean in it as well as getting a handle on the best way to paddle and a host of other little minor things that are best learned without having a boat load of fishing tackle getting in the way. All of this will be done in the sheltered waters close to the shore as I work on getting a handle on these basic issues. I have already gotten a cheapo car top mounting kit (foam blocks-a tie strap-hooks and a couple of pieces of rope) and will be getting a PFD and Paddle prior to dumping the money on the kayak itself. I have already added to the mounting kit with some more rope, prepared the existing ropes by securing the hooks and melting the ends of the ropes (all Polypropylene type ropes) to keep them from unraveling.

From what I have read so far in relation to the little A10 (10 feet 2 inches long-31 inches wide, open cockpit design) it seems like a good inexpensive ($299) way to get into the hobby as well as get out on the water. The only cons that I have read so far are in relation to the tipsiness of the design which I think is more related to a new kayak user not used to that particular little oddity of the breed rather than the actual craft. Most of the posted commentary on the Bass Pro site is positive in nature and judging from looking at the selection in the store they seem like a well made and designed craft.

Just starting out I am full of questions and puzzled about a few things but I am sure that further research as well as some hands on experience will soon put all of that to right. I am enjoying reading the posts and gleaning a little more information from them as I work my way through the forum threads.
