Hi All,
I know, don't even have the Kayak yet and here I am scoring a PFD. But that sort of makes a statement about the importance of having and using one. I may go for another type or style later, but for a first one out of the gate, I figure that this will suffice. I hate to sound like a shill for Bass Pro Shops, but since they have one of their nice big fancy stores right here in Vegas, it is where I did my shopping. There is also a number of Big 5 Sporting Goods Stores in town, but looking at the stock they had and comparing prices, Bass Pro got the nod.
The one I selected is, of course, a USCG approved Class III type. It features a mesh top section so it should be cooler to deal with out here in the heat of the day. The rest of the vest is constructed of Rip Stop Nylon. The only thing I didn't much care for was the OD Green color, but I figure I can spray paint on some patches of bright reflective paint front and rear to make it and me a bit more visible out on the water. It also sports two zippered compartments and 6 Velcro fastened pockets. All of them have drain holes riveted in them. So, besides soaking whatever I carry in them, the water will also drain out after a dunking. It features two one inch wide nylon web belts with quick disconnect type buckles as well as a full length plastic zipper up the front. There is also a Velcro fastened tab up high on the front that is supposed to function as a rod holder, in my case, it is where I will be carrying my official police type stainless steel whistle on a small chunk of beaded chain. I figure that the rods will be fastened to the Kayak or in the rod holder I am planning on mounting on to it so that is a good substitution use for that little tab.
After looking over the selection and making my choice of PFD, I browsed around to see what other items I might be needing-wanting-hankerin' for. I did see that they had a good deal on Carlisle Day Tripper Paddles, probably have to score one of those come next Friday when the eagle screams. I like the two piece design that has a little button so you can use it as either a regular inline type or rotate the ends so they are 60 degrees apart. It will give me a chance to try two styles of paddle in one package for a low price. Once I figure out what style I like better I will look around for a better and possibly longer one and save the Day Tripper to carry as a spare just in case. I was also checking out the wading shoe selection to see what they might have available. There were about four different styles ranging from $19 to $40. I figure that a pair of those would be better than an old pair of tennis shoes, especially since the water will drain out of them a lot quicker.
