I'm looking for a nice, beginner tandem kayak. I'm 6'-4", 280 lbs. so room is important. I'd like something that allows for seat adjustments so I can go out alone sometimes. Mainly lakes, ponds and slow-moving rivers will be the use.
I'd prefer something used if possible but have no idea what to search or what kind of money is needed. One pretty old scratched up one on Craigslist was going for $450 with paddles.
Any advice?

Hi Jeff
Take a look at the Old Town Dirigo XT Tandem Plus. This kayak has a weight limit of 425 - 475 lbs. The Old Town Otter has a weight limit of about 450 - 500 lbs. Both of these kayaks are sit inside kayaks and can be difficult to get into if you are a titan.
In that case a sit on top kayak will be your best bet as you sit on top of the kayak and not inside one. The Ocean Kayak range has got some really good kayaks and are really popular. The Ocean Kayak Malibu Two XL has a weight limit of about 450 - 500 lbs. You can get away with just over US$1000 for one.
Taking these kayaks in consideration, it would be best if you can go to demo days and paddle these kayaks to the feel. Demo days is great as you don't need to pay a cent to test these kayaks. Otherwise the other option is to rent a few kayaks and then test them, which might be a bit costy.
Hope this will help.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm calling around now to see if I can find anyone who does demo days.
