View Full Version : Mooring my kayak in the slip of a dock - need ideas

I have three kayaks in a slip on the Catawba River, Lake Wylie. Two problems: the bylaws of the dock do not allow keeping the kayaks out of the water. Hence, they get all gunked up on the bottoms in as little as a week.

For problem 1: What’s the easy way to keep them up out of the water? What kind of floaters can I get and where do I get them? I know there are all kinds of lifts but they are expensive and I cannot do any altering of the dock. Has to be in the water, roped in, etc.

For problem 2: I waxed the bottoms but it did not help. Perhaps it made the cleaning easier but I still needed to use a brush which brushed off the wax.

Thanks. I hope someone can help me with this.

Wow now that one is tough. Not knowing all the rules. So boats are not allowed on lifts? I was thinking a set of ratchet straps fed through pvc pipes across the slips tied to each side of the slip when you use them loosen the straps so they are down in the water then when when you are done put the kayak in plce and ratchet up. The kayaks would have to be tied off to the slips. Now if you are talking about all boats have to be left touching water, that is a ridiculous rule and I would attempt to have it changed.

Without knowing all the rules regulations that you must abide by I’m just going to throw the idea out to you… Can you get “creative” with…(don’t laugh just yet) pool noodles. I have seen them use for some pretty interesting projects. They do float great, and can be found hollow so rope can be threaded through them. You could do a basket weave “dry dock” and still have the boats in the water. Just something to consider.
