Neoprene boots should fit snug when trying on in the shop. Once they fill with water they get bigger. Not as tight as you can get them, you don't gain any extra performance, but just snug fitting.
A zipper is worth the extra cost.

are they much better than regular "pool shoes"? So far I've been wearing sandals, but if booties are a lot warmer than other stuff, I'll go for those soon.
