More info

The Severn Bore is one of Britain's few truly spectacular natural phenomena. It is a large surge wave that can be seen in the estuary of the River Severn, where the tidal range is the 2nd highest in the world, being as much as 50 feet (approx. 15.4m).

Latest Update

What is the Severn Bore?

Tide waves (bores) naturally appear on rivers with large tidal ranges. This natural phenomenom occurs in the lower reaches of a few rivers throughout the world, during high tides.

The Severn Estuary has the second highest tidal range in the world. The difference between the highest and lowest tide in any one day can be more than 24.5 metres.

A bore is formed when the tide rises in a narrowing channel with a rising river-bed formed in a funnel shape.

There are large tides when the Moon and Sun are in line with the Earth at their closest respective distances directly above the equator.

The largest spring tides happen near the Autumn and Spring Equinox, usually in March and October.

The size of the bore can be affected by opposing winds or high fresh-water levels which reduce its height and delay when it arrives, but a following wind can increase its height and speed when it arrives. It travels at an average speed of 16 kilometres an hour and has been known to reach an incredible two metres in height.

* 4.5 4.6m
** 4.7 4.8m
*** 4.9 5.0m
**** 5.1 14.3m
***** 14.4m+

We will all be meeting at the campsite on the 18th. On the 19th there are two 3* bores for those wishing to surf them. In the evening we will be meeting at the local pub for a BBQ and to brag about the day. We will endeavour to have any photos taken displayed on a plasma screen for your enjoyment. On the Sunday is the big one (4*), so if you fancy it you can go play, but we will also be watching from the best viewpoint in Minsterworth, behind the church. The church will be providing refreshments and cakes!

Keep checking here for further developments.
