First post here. haven't even had time to lurk for a while.
My question is: Without spending over a thousand for a first time kayak, I want to see if it is for me. I see Dick's & S.A. have sit ons for about $500 to $600. Are they worth the money? I am looking to strictly fish from it. I own a bass boat & also fish the ocean from a center console but, there are way too many waters near me with no boat access that I want to fish. So I am of the opinion that a minimum investment is the way to go for my learning curve.
Feedback appreciated!
Thanks.

I'm new here also so I'll welcome us both. Won't try to answer your question because I don't fish on my kayak. I have seen a lot of sit-upons out there. I would probably stay away from Dick's and other big-box places as (from my experience) they usually know little or nothing about their kayaks. I would find a great locak kayak/boat dealer who will help with the purchase and follow up service.

Additionally, after looking through the members list, you wouldn't have been able to lurk long. The moderator has 20 posts, the administrator has 6. Oviously a new(ish) forum. Let's watch it grow.

My buddy uses a sit on to fish on the large lake here. He trolls so recommends a sinking line as other boats don't think a kayak is a fishing craft and come too close. Stopping paddling immediately sinks the line out of the way of their propellors.

No there's not alot of action to this place. Maybe it will get better. Big Smoke I fish out of my sit in quite a bit. It been great fun. Just have to watch out for the jet skiers. I had one get to close and flipped me over.Welcome to the place.

BND that's one way to look at it and then if you like it you can step it up a bit. Another way is to get as much as you can afford because the more versatile it is the more you will use it. You can buy a kayak and outfit it they way you like. I saw two kayaks this weekend from Dick's and they seem fine they were bought for kids and they were enjoying them. I personally went with ones that had a bit more comfortable seats and a few extras here and there.

As far as the board goes it will only progress and grow if people use it. So lets use it.
